travis DG edna

Showing kids a vagina?

Video games as sexual education? Just mentioning the words "video games" and "sexual" usually stirs up storm within the "church of throat cramming moral" but what if we throw in the word "education" in there as well? Will this perhaps calm the angry mob of overprotecting parents?

Sadly, the answer is no. Recently, a game company called "Zombie Crows" got the big No from Microsoft on publishing their new game "Privates" on XBLA due to its sexual content. But "Privates" isn't a game about having sex or picking up prostitutes or anything like that. Do you remember a children's cartoon show called "Once Upon a Time... Life"? Zombie Crows game is like that. We play as a small character, exploring different body parts and at the same time learning about how our body works. What got MS uneasy was the fact that you got to explore some of our more private parts, such as the vagina and the anus (hence its name). But really, "Privates" would be a perfect game for kids for the same reason that MS dismisses it: It directly adresses children about how human bodys look and work, it teaches us in a smart and playful way. Instead of playing this game, these kids will probably watch porn or play GTA IV and that is of course so much better. Is not what I think.

Check out Zombie Crows website for the game and have a look.

Regards

Travis DG Edna

Convoluted Mario Galaxy

Today, I finished my first run through Super Mario Galaxy. The game is tremendously fun and a statement of superiority in gameplay. I have had so much fun running, jumping, swimming and flying around in Nintendo's great take on outer space and I was astonished over how well the game rewards curiosity and exploration! Everytime I looked round a corner, I discovered something new and exciting and that is a proof of good game quality, if you ask me. I ended up with 65 stars and I pretty much skipped the last two rooms, because I couldn't wait to see how Mario's epic space saga would end. And what an end it was.

As I said, Super Mario Galaxy's quality had my eyes, ears and brain cheering of joy throughout the whole time I played. Until I beat Bowser for the final time. Then, the final movie sequence rolls and something happens to the playful and innocent story that has so far coloured my experience. I can hardly explain what the ending was about! I mean; I saw what happened, yes, I UNDERSTAND what I saw but I just can't believe that they went for such a convoluted, cryptic ending when the rest of the game was so straightforward and fairy tale-like.

There is a theme of death and rebirth, or rather a theme of cycles. When one thing ends, another begins to take its place. Fine, I got that. Why does everyone get sucked into a friggin' BLACK HOLE, accompanied by an out-of-place graphical illustration, and then all just goes back to "normal"? What do this ending have to do with cycles? It's no wonder that when you google "Super Mario Galaxy ending", Google suggest "Super Mario Galaxy ending explained". You need to get this thing explained to get it. Thing is, no one really knows, there's just different thoughts on the matter. Here is my thoughts:

After Mario defeats Bowser, the galaxy-to-be collapses (due to its unstableness), causing a black hole. Now, since the black hole is located at the centre of the universe - and because it's a really REALLY big black hole - the entire universe gets sucked in. Yes, Mario, Princess Peach, Bowser, Rosalina, Luigi, all the Toads, all the Lumas, Princess Peach's castle and Rosalinas spacecraft too. Everything disappears. But... All the Lumas sets out to prevent all existence from being erased and so they come together to stop the vortex of the black hole and create a new universe (or a new galaxy). After this, everything turns black. Then, Rosalina (who's now HUGE) talks to Mario about rebirth and the cycle of life. Then Mario awakes, back outside princess Peach's castle in Mushroom Kingdom. Bowser and Peach also wakes up just beside him and Bowser seems quite out of it. Luigi is nowhere to be seen, however. Then Mario looks out into space and discovers the new galaxy and upon this, he cheers. End.

There are several ways to interpret this but I think it's hard to avoid the possibility that Mario, Peach, Bowser and everyone else died and then was recreated (or reborn). Yes, Mario and friends were wiped from existence and then, new characters replaced them. Oh dear... I don't know why they wanted me to feel like when I saw the ending of "2001: A Space Odyssey" (and they succeeded) but was this really the ending they aimed for from the beginning? Nintendo has never been very keen on making things more complicated than a ten year old would understand so I just don't get why they ended Super Mario Galaxy in such an ambiguous way. And my description of the ending isn't really a good substitute for experiencing the thing yourself, so that you may understand my confusion and irritation, take a look at this.

So, the only thing left for me to do is to collect the remaining 55 stars to get the "120 Stars" ending. At least I know that the way there will be nothing but sheer platforming perfection, even if the final ending also leaves a funny taste in the mouth.

After the long silence...

Sorry for the (extreme) delay in updates around here. You know, moving to a new place takes sometime but settling down in that new place takes even more time! And that's what I've been doing for the last month: Trying to find my pace in Umeå. I'm not quite there yet, it takes some feeling around and a lot of exploring. Luckily, having a friend like Snubben V of course makes everything much easier. I couldn't begin to explain how glad I am to have such a great guy as my friend! Together, we've visited some of the exciting places in the city. We talk a lot and I feel more and more at home here. I wonder how long it would've taken me to feel at home if he didn't live here?

My ongoing project to upload a new video every Friday have gone pretty smoothly so far. It's not easy to have something new to present every week but rest assured, I do have many things planned. One of my more serious ideas is to make a webseries with Mister Square Eyes. Yes, he will get his own show and it will, naturally, revolve around video games. I will name it "YOUR Square Eyes Show", "YSES" for short. In my mind, it could be great and when I say "great", I mean "great fun". I have no dreams of rivalling the Nerd or the Critic but after have seen many of the other "famous" webseries regarding video games or such, I have seen that I could do as good as they do, to say the least. Some are popular, even though they totally misunderstand the concept of a catch-phrase or are just obnoxious. Yuck.

Enough of that. I will end with a note that I have completed my first song! Lyrics and music exclusively written by me! What is it about? Oh, come now! It's about video games, of course! I'm planning to release this on YouTube along with a music video featuring Mister Square Eyes. Yes, it will be glorious. It will mark the beginning of YSES. You may have to wait a while though. Making the music video will take some time. Hold on!

Until then!

travisDGedna

Famous!

It is something that many, many people seek today. It may be the most important goal in life even! Today, we have so many different tools to make it, but so few actually does. Fame - to be famous - is equal to success, living a good life, being filthy rich and being in love. Yes, the one goal for modern man isn't a relationship built on love, vast riches or even a good job: We want to get famous! If only a little while, if only for a small crowd... But fame is relative and celebrities are only famous in certain groups. So it's hard to say how and when you are famous. To get recognised is no easy task. If there was a list showing how to do it, it would maybe look something like this:

1). Do something extraordinary, because no one ever got famous being ordinary.

2). Know how and where to reach out to others, because it's all about finding the right crowd.

3). Work hard - but don't expect hard work will automatically lead to instant fame.

4). Be persistent - One hit wonders are soon forgotten and the real successful always follow up their success. ;)

5). Do something you KNOW how to do! Find your thing, then exploit it to the best of your ability.

6). Not everyone has the stuff to reach fame. If you've tried over and over again with no result and you feel there is nothing left that you can do, then maybe you should give up or at least take a break and let your ideas mature for some time.

I once wrote a list, similar to this, on how to be an original and it's very reminiscent of this list. The two are closely linked together, since originals often get famous in certain circumstances.

Why is it so important then? Why do we want thousands, maybe even hundreds of thousands of people to recognise us and to admire us? It certainly brings and enormous feeling of accomplishment and confirmation of our personality: When so many people follow you, then you must have something, right? Something unique.

"I, me, mine" or "Me, Myself and I" are common "sayings" and it is in our nature to seek something splendid for ourselves. Yes, after all, it is only myself I care about, not anyone else and the same thing goes for you too, I assure you. You might care for others and I think Albert Einstein once said that "A life lived for others is the only life worth living" but the truth is that how much you might love another person, in the end it is only you.

I love video games, I love writing about them, I love making movies and I love editing them but what I want above all is to get recognised for what I do. I want others to compliment me, I want them to be jealous of my talent and I want them to suck up to me and think that they're my best friend. I haven't accomplished that yet but I'm not quitting yet. No, sir. You see, the last but most important thing to do to get famous is to never, NEVER doubt that you have what it takes to get famous.

So when I ask you to take a look at my latest videos on youtube and check out our new review of "Rabbids Go Home", I'm just hoping you're someone important enough to make me either famous or very, very rich.

Travis DG Edna

The other night when me and my friend Svedlund played a round of Rush in Battlefield: Bad Company 2 with a third guy we met through the game, my friend asked him why he speaks so quietly upon which he replies: "My kids are sleeping in the next room". Svedlund was very surprised by the answer and when we talked about it later, he told me it sounded so very old to say that you're keeping your voice down in a Xbox Live chat to not wake your kids up. I started to think about what he said about this video gaming father and the fact that we're not kids anymore. But when did that happen? The way from my childhood, through teenage and up to adulthood seems so short and even if we've changed, we're still the same in the end. We still play video games and avoid growing up too much.

All those kids growing up in the 70's, 80's and even the early 90's have grown up now. All those who played video games and still play them have gone through school, they have jobs and possibly families now. But they're still gamers and that is fascinating! In the 90's, video games were intended to be played by kids, developed to be enjoyed by 10 year olds (boys) and games meant for older audiences were scarce. The scene has changed now and we actually see games being targeted to adults and by "adults" I mean people from 20 to 80. We have brain training games (Dr. Kawashima's Brain Training), we have games that activate you physically (Wii Fit Plus) and we have intriguing story driven games (Heavy Rain). This evolution of video game market is interesting and very promising for the media of video games! People grow and find new things they like, they need new kinds of games to keep their interest. Having a wider range of video game genres to choose from will also establish video games as a serious part of modern life.

But I digress. The thing I mostly thought about when my friend and I talked about the third guy's fatherhood was that I might have kids some day. Will I also become a father who, after tucking the kids in at night, goes online and starts killing virtual Russian soldiers a couple of hours before bed (gotta get up early to work the next day)? It's almost scary thinking about it. Becoming that guy is far, far away from where I am now. Today, I turned 23 years old. Nothing worth making a big deal out of but... My own father was 23 when mom first got pregnant with my big sister. That puts this birthday in a new perspective. "Growing up" is a loose term and saying it implies nothing without context. For now, I'm glad being a 23 year old kid-youth-adult-thingy. At least for one more year.

Travis DG Edna

Top five songs introduced to me in movies

Music might be the most important piece of culture through history. No other media has the power to engage or influence people like music do. It empowers our greatest moments, it comforts us when we cry over lost love, it helps us channel anger and it just makes us want to move our body to its rhythm. Music is in us, even as our surrounding is completely quiet. I think music works best when it is used as a mean to enhance an emotion. This is of course the whole purpose of music: To enhance/emote a feeling. That is why we make music and that is why we listen to it.

Something I really like is discovering a great song that I never heard before. It doesn't need to be newly written or anything, just new to me. I often pick up these new songs on the radio, on Spotify or iTunes but the place where I have discovered most of the new truly great songs is in the movies. It happens once, maybe twice a year: I visit the cinema or rent a DVD and halfway through the movie, an amazing song starts playing that fully encapsulate the scene and emotion that the film is aiming for. A perfect choice. Many of my favourite movies has introduced a song to me that really made me shudder out of pleasure. So I thought I'd make a Top five songs introduced to me in movies. The rule I follow here is that I mustn't have heard the song before I saw the film it was featured in. These are not just good songs, but they're featured in really good movies. So go and see the movie, as well!

Number five: The Promise by When in Rome (Napoleon Dynamite)

I was late to discover Napoleon Dynamite. The buzz about this low-budget nerd-comedy had already been going on for some time before I rented the film on DVD. I really liked it but I wasn't blown away by it. I saw it a couple of times and it grew on me. Especially the ending is a nice scene with Napoleon, the protagonist, and Deb, his love interest, playing a game of tether ball together. It's a scene of future promises and possibilities. This is where "The Promise" kicks in and really cements the feeling of true faithful love.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tOyyrB1wj04

Number four: Stop Crying Your Heart Out by Oasis (The Butterfly Effect)

I first saw The Butterfly Effect sometime during my second year in high school and by then it was a few years old, I think. I remember being totally sucked in into the plot and I really cared about the characters. Aside from the most obvious message, for me, the film is about a love that we yearn for so very, very hard in our hearts but can't reach. I felt touched by it and felt sorrow deep down, as if I were in the same situation. "Stop Crying Your Heart Out" is played right at the ending and sums up all those feelings of loss and lost love that the film contains. A very strong ending to a great movie and it was after seeing this movie that I really started listening to Oasis.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6BjQ3LrmkTY

Number three: Extreme Ways by Moby (The Bourne Identity)

"Extreme Ways" is featured in all of the three films in the Bourne-trilogy but it was in the first mind blowing part where I first discovered it. I had heard a lot of praise for the Bourne-films and I bought The Bourne Identity and Supremacy on PSP UMD for a cheap price. At the time, Ultimatum hadn't reached the cinemas yet. I saw the first movie while travelling by train and though I had a hard time hearing the voices in the film (due to the weak sound of the PSP) I still quickly discovered a new favourite film. The Bourne-films were a whole new level of action and displayed some really amazing skills in editing fighting scenes. After seeing the movie, my heart beat quickly and I felt as in ecstasy and this is when "Extreme Ways" kicks in. Yes, just like number four and five this is the credit song of the movie but it was so fitting to end an action packed adrenaline rush as The Bourne Identity with this soothing techno song.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pOuPqeHXMzQ

Number two: Love Reign O'er Me by Pearl Jam (Reign Over Me)

Yes, this is originally a song by The Who and yes, the original Who-version is also featured in the movie. BUT the Pearl Jam-version is played earlier in the movie and it is specifically covered by Pearl Jam just for this movie and, dear lord, is it good? Yes, yes, it is. It is fantastic, amazing, incredible and f-ing AWESOME! The emotions caused by listening to this song cannot be described. Oh, I mustn't forget to mention the movie because I think that everyone who has an interest in movies, especially GOOD ones, should see this. If I tell you Adam Sandler is one of the main character you might think of some of the other films he's been in but no, this is nothing like that. This movie is an emotional powerhouse and the relationship between the different characters really feels real and honest. It's a nice change to the usual Hollywood formula of making movies. See it sometime. And listen to the unbelievably good song.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=663L-GWQdws

Number one: Everybody's Gotta Learn Sometimes by Beck (Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind)

Where do I begin to describe what this movie means to me? It is significant in so many ways that it may well be a definition of who I am. The movie is about love but not as you might think and it wouldn't be fair of me to define what Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind really centres around. For me, the most important aspect of this movie is how it reflects upon our memories and how utterly important some of our memories are. It may be all we have in the end. I won't go on with this incoherent review of this masterpiece of a movie but let me just say that the one thing that really made me fall in love with it was when Beck's "Everybody's Gotta Learn Sometimes" began playing for the first time in the movie. I don't remember but I think I cried. The Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind will forever stand as one of my personal favourites, a movie dear to the heart and Beck's melancholy song is the very best song I ever discovered while watching a movie.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WIVh8Mu1a4Q

Twenty-ten and the future

Finally back on familiar grounds, I had the chance to upload our latest episode of AIE on Youtube. We're still working hard to refine elements of the show to make it more appealing and entertaining and during the next few episodes I believe you will notice some changes that'll make us look a bit more professional and hopefully the pacing will benefit greatly from this. I have several ideas to change and expand the show and it remains to be seen how many of these ideas that makes it in to the show: Not every good idea is good, so to speak,

Anyway, be sure to take a look at our latest episode and share your opinion with us. We will listen to your critique and, if possible, adapt to what you like and don't like.

No that I'm back in Sweden and have access to Internet 24/7 I will of course update the website more often and make more videos and such. I also plan on writing a few reviews, after finally getting my hands on some of last years (!) greatest games. Pata already reviewed Dragon Age: Origins, the bastard, but I have now played the game for over 100 hours and have discovered what a great game it is! Truly, one of my absolute greatest gaming experience in years. One thing bad about the game is the glitches that cut out the sound in conversations some times. I also discovered a very strange glitch, trying to put on Noble cloths on one of the main characters, the cloths turned yellow and you could read the words "DO NOT USE" written on the front and the back of the dress. Very odd.

I have yet to played the game as a mage but I will do this as soon as I'm done collecting some of the harder Achievements from Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. Needless to say, the game is an experience no role-playing gamer should miss. I guess I should recommend the PC version, which has superior control possibilities. I myself played it on my Xbox but I found it a bit difficult to manage the team during combat so I mostly played it like a action-adventure game, controlling only the main character.

What else is new? Oh, it's 2010 now! Looking forward from here, it seems that 2010 might be yet another great year for video gamers. The question is if it can top last year, it won't be easy. Come to think of it, we've had some of video games most important years in history just during these last years of the 21st Century. What year do you regard as the best/greatest/most important? I leave you with this question. You can answer the new "Flavour of the Month" to let us know.

Travis DG Edna

Oh! I was also told to tell you that Aegidrom won't be writing new posts on the website for a while. Both he and Pata is graduating from high school this summer so they're pretty much buried in schoolwork from this point until they graduate. After that, however, I hope they'll be more involved here. We will still make videos though, don't fret.

Beginnings and endings

I barely had time to unpack my Xbox 360 in our new flat on Grange Loan, Edinburgh, before my (now ex) girlfriend told me we had to talk and I knew what the talk would be about. Now, I planning my voyage home. Ironical, I think. All things that has a beginning, has an end. The question is not if but when. And possibly, for the mournful, why. It lasted nearly a year now, as the new decennium begins, my relationship has ended. It's rather fitting, in a way. I will not be beaten down by it. Instead, I'll look forward, I'll make me a better self this year and I will pursue personal goals that I put aside when I fell in love.

I will, for example, put more effort in making videos of all kinds and I will try to learn about film-making and editing and develop my sense and skills in the art of filming. This will be my primary point of interest but I will also try to develop my other skills such as writing and painting. However, the painting part will mostly consist of me doodling stickmen on a white paper-sheet. I will also move to a new location where I can flourish and be by myself for a while. No duties to anyone but myself. Ah, that's my preferred way of life. Also, this will of course mean A LOT OF VIDEO GAMES, YEAAAUUUH! Seriously, I will play more, write more and make more movies. This will eventually lead up to either: A). A career within a Video Game Magazine. B). A career within the film-making business. C). Both of the above. I'll enjoy either but C is the choice I'm hoping for.

You may think I'm taking this break-up business a bit too good, you may even say I'm totally emotionless about it. That wouldn't be completely true but not completely false either. When my mum got to hear about it, she called me and was upset on the phone and she cried. I wonder what she'd say if she found out that I was having a good time playing Texas Hold 'Em on my Xbox 360 right before she called. How's that for recovery? Now, I'm going back to the apartment to play some "Rabbids Go Home" against my ex. She'll regret she ever met me! *subtle smirk*
